40 Objects for 40 Years

Torcher Chamber Arkestra (2016) – Carrie Fertig
As part of Craftspace Curates: exploring craft in an expanded field
Ten years ago we worked with the artist Carrie Fertig to hold a dramatic performance of the Torcher Chamber Arkestra at the Midlands Arts Centre.
In this unusual collaboration, Carrie created a series of glass instruments, live, using the process of flameworking. Then, these newly created instruments along with others, made from recycled glass, were played by Carrie and other musicians and combined with electronic and digital sound.
This was part of season of projects which encouraged audiences to consider the role of craft and the maker in society: craft in an expanded field. We supported artists to think differently, experiment and take risks.
Nominated by: Learning & Engagement Manager, Deirdre B.
To celebrate Craftspace’s 40th Anniversary, we commissioned the artist Stewart Francis Easton to create an artwork which would explore the story of Craftspace through 40 objects. Stewart created a series of four beautiful graphic quilts.
