SUMMARY:Artists' Exchange
DESCRIPTION:We warmly invite you to our event Artists Exchange with artist Shalini Dam on Wednesday 19 August\, 6 – 8pm at Craftspace. A combined artist talk\, making activity\, and discussion\, Shalini will talk about her work\, share a clay technique specific to her practice\, and open a discussion around care for artists. \nShalini is visiting Birmingham from Goa\, India. She is interested in themes of care and connection within communities and hyper-local stories\, addressing contradictions and dualities hidden under the surface. Working primarily with clay\, Shalini uses an unusual technique that alters and changes the way the viewer perceives the images and objects she makes\, as they move around her work. Following an 18-year career in advertising\, Shalini changed focus\, studying ceramics in Cardiff and then growing her practice from her home studio in Goa. She is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics in Geneva and exhibits internationally. \nShalini’s experiences of care within the arts\, like all artists\, are shaped by the cultures and spaces where she has found opportunities to make\, show and talk about her work. Interested in the different and shared ways artists take care of themselves and one another\, we invite you to bring your thoughts and experiences of care to the conversation and help us learn more about what genuine care feels like for artists. \nSecure your place via our Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:Diasporic Creative Exchanges: India - Birmingham
DESCRIPTION:Organised by Craftspace in collaboration with Ikon Gallery and generously supported by the British Council.\n\nDrop in and meet Break the Mould artist in residence Roo Dhissou and artist Shalini Dam in the galleries at Ikon Gallery for activity and engagement drawing on the theme of diaspora\, care-based practices and clay as a site of experimentation.\n\nThis day of activation draws on Craftspace’s Made in the Middle exhibition which aimed to reflect on how Midlands culture and creativity is influenced\, strengthened and enriched by individual and community connections to a global diaspora.\n\nIn this context notions of diaspora deploy expansive and pluralistic world views and a sense that collective wellbeing recognises the need for interdependencies\, multi-lateral co-operation and shared values.\n\n\nAbout the Artists\nArtist and researcher Roo Dhissou‘s practice spans sculpture\, installation\, moving image\, craft\, and community-engaged collaboration. Rooted in care\, cultural context\, and integrity\, her work challenges dominant narratives and reflects deeply on disability\, lived experience\, social\, environmental and material justice. Through reflective processes and ethical research\, Dhissou values relationship-building and intuition\, prioritising process over product to create thoughtful\, impactful work. \nShalini Dam lives and works in Goa\, India where she has her home studio. Dam’s work addresses contradictions and dualities hidden under the surface\, communicated directly through her unusual technique which results in lenticular effects. She manipulates the surface of clay to create an optical illusion that animates the surface. As the viewer walks across the work or around it\, the image changes\, making the viewer’s engagement and interaction integral to the artwork. She is interested in themes of care and connection within communities and hyper-local stories. She has also been exploring film as a medium to record site specific transient and performative clay work. \n\nImage by Tom Bird. Courtesy of Ikon Gallery.

SUMMARY:Collage & Mark-Making in Birmingham's Historic Jewellery Quarter
DESCRIPTION:Come along to this relaxed and friendly workshop in which artist Amber Lily will support to create your own artwork inspired by the unique character of Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter\, followed by a selection of vegetarian small plates by Txitikeo\, Birmingham’s premier tapas restaurant. \nThe workshop will begin with a short walking tour of the local area\, exploring the colours\, textures and forms of the streetscape. \nYou’ll then return to the workshop\, where Amber will walk you through exploring how colour\, texture and mark-making can be combined to create accomplished collages reflecting the character of a place. \nYou will have access to a range of materials (handmade papers\, paints\, pens\, mark-making tools\, and more) to help you add texture and depth to your piece. You’ll also have a chance to finish your artwork with stitched details. \nAmber and members of the Craftspace team will be there to guide and support you at each step of the way. \nOnce you are happy with your finished artwork\, you’ll have the chance to enjoy some delicious\, traditional pinchos (tapas-style dishes from Northern Spain\, affectionately described as ‘tasty stuff on bread’!) and a glass of something nice to celebrate\, made by our neighbours at Txikiteo – Birmingham’s premier tapas restaurant. \nThis event is hosted by Craftspace\, a Birmingham-based charity bringing people together through craft. \nAmber Lily is a contemporary textile artist whose practice centres on colour\, texture\, and mark-making\, creating abstract works rooted in everyday experience. She draws inspiration from often-overlooked details such as litter\, graffiti\, scuffed surfaces\, and urban plant life\, translating these observations into layered compositions. \nTxikiteo is the home of Spanish-inspired\, coal-fired small and large plates in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. It gets its name from the Basque tradition of hopping from bar to bar\, enjoying a small drink and bite to eat in each.
